Seismic Design,Anchors,Rebars,Seismic Anchor

2.3K

Earthquake is one of the deadliest natural hazard which gives little to no warning before striking. India is one of the countries that is prone to this hazard and has had a history of devastating earthquakes. We can only be prepared by designing our structures to withstand the effects and minimize the losses. In the past few decades, we have gathered significant knowledge on this subject, both by research and case studies. With these findings being inducted in our local regulations, seismic design and retrofitting of buildings have become key topics of discussion in our construction fraternity. However, there is still little to no guidance available on method of selection of suitable connection systems for seismic retrofit applications.

Please feel free to post your thoughts or queries on the subject in the comment section below. You can also share some case studies / applications examples with fellow members.

Case Study- Seismic Upgrade of Existing Building Observations: The structure was initially built as per the prevalent national codes which targets seismic performance of “Collapse Prevention”. The client wanted to ensure immediate use after a major earthquake and wanted work to be carried out without any disruption to office functioning. Solution: ASCE-41 was used for design. Fluid viscous seismic dampers were added at key junctions using through bolt connections. Some columns & beams were also strengthened using concrete jacketing prior to fixing of dampers.
