Pounding can occur, if two parts are close and they are shaking with different modes, or in different direction, it is not only relating to the soft soil, it is more related to the dynamic properties of each component of your structure, or lets say system. so pounding occur when you have to close structures (not suffisant separation gap) and different vibration mode or phase.

Vibrations take place if the foundation /columns are built on soil, because simply every particle in the soil is vibrating at different speed. Better to build on solid rock if you have that in the area.

There is no direct relationship between soil type and pounding. Pounding might occur in any soil type. BTW, pounding is generally the case within story levels rather than foundation level.
