geostationary satellite is in a geostationary orbit, which can only be achieved at an altitude very close to 35,786 km (22,236 m) and keeps the satellite fixed over one longitude at the equator. The satellite appears motionless at a fixed position in the sky to ground observers.

The “stationary” part of geostationary describes how a satellite in this orbit remains fixed with respect to an observer on the ground. This is an ideal orbit for communications satellites, since ground-based antennas can remain pointed at the same spot in the sky.
