What do you need to consider selecting ground motion input for seismic design ? what are the different methods ?

The following need to be considered:
- Type of soil on which the structure has to be erected
- The seismic zone
- The type of structure (for importance factor)
- The load resisting system for response reduction factor
Different methods which can be used are as below:
- Equivalent static method
- Response reduction method

In order to perform dynamic analyses on structures, you need to select ground motions expected at a particular site depending on the expected magnitude, fault mechanism, site class etc. The selection of ground motion records depends on the objective of the analyses. For example, evaluation of median demands/collapse analysis of structures.Depending on the objective the ground motion selection guidelines may vary.
