Decoding methods for optimal Base Plate Thickness
Being the interface between the superstructure and the foundation, multiple factors play key influence on the rigidity of the base plate. Usually, it becomes tedious to assess the actual behavior of the plate; but if left unchecked, it can result into underestimation of anchor forces and in a long run to failure! To add to the concern, the basic design code guidelines require the base plate to be rigid for designing the anchors as per the procedure prescribed in them; as currently, none of the usually referred codes include methodology to design and analyze more flexible base plates. However, a designer could utilize analysis tools like Finite Element Modeling (FEM) to better ascertain the scale between fully flexible and infinitely rigid. Our Subject Matter Expert will go in details of the following topics: • Design Code Guidelines on Baseplate Behavior • Concept of Rigid and Flexible Baseplates • Rigidity Check with FEM Analysis
