Over-torqued and under-torqued anchors are among the most common causes of failed jobsite inspections

  • Stud anchors are torque-controlled expansion anchors which require specific installation torque to properly set the anchor.
  • Correct torque for the anchor ensures right performance and transfer of forces from the baseplate to concrete.
  • If not torqued well, once the load is applied the entire system can experience displacement which is a big issue to the design and can result in to safety concern in a number of application.
  • Top reasons for baseplate failure has been around anchor installation quality. To correctly install an anchor your need a torque wrench which can be slow and imprecise which has low productvity.
  • There is a lot of dependency on pull-out test today to check the installation quality.
  •  Now, with Hilti's Adaptive Torque (AT) system, you don’t have to compromise on safety and installation parameters, while reducing the number of pull out tests.

ANCHOR FAILURE DUE TO UNDER AND OVER TORQUING

Under-Torqueing can result into unexpected displacements of baseplate and anchor pull-out

The initial load sets the anchor with initial displacement. But, if the anchor is not torqued well or the pre-tension is not enough, it will react to all loading changes. This will lead to a lot of displacement over time and can even lead to anchor pull-out.

OVER-TORQUING CAN CAUSE SPLITTING, STEEL OR PULL-OUT FAILURE, OR PULL THROUGH OF THE ANCHOR

The excessive pretension can cause visible cracks near edge of slab. Excessive torqueing can also cause anchor failure, resulting in breaking of the steel. Over torqueing can also lead to pull-out of the anchor from the wedge of the sleeve.
